New J2 650 tills deliver high performance and use less energy for cinema operator
Vue Entertainment has this week reported that 25% of its estate is already feeling the benefit of using J2 650 till systems.
The multiplex cinema operator said it is making good progress in the rollout of the latest J2 PC-based touchscreen electronic point of sale (EPoS) units for its dual-purpose ticket offices and concession counters.
Dave Wilson, Vue’s head of IT operations, said that for many years, the firm used a number of different J2 models ranging from the Viper through to the J2 560, which Retail Technology magazine first covered in its May 2007 issue.
"Our goal is to move the whole estate over to J2’s latest machine, the J2 650, which is designed for high performance. We’re doing a full refresh cycle, removing ageing and obsolete hardware and adopting one standard unit for all our cinemas,” he said.
Flexibility and efficiency benefits
While a number of the old tills were desk-mounted, Vue is now taking advantage of the J2 650’s ‘all-in-one’ approach, which enables the unit to be adapted to pole, wall or counter-mounting without modification.
“It’s particularly useful to have the J2 650s pole-mounted,” added Wilson. “This means we can freely twist the screens around towards the customers for seat selection. It generally makes the whole process smoother.”
Wilson reported that installation went well and that cinema staff find the J2 650s neater, due to reworked cabling and a more modern design. The team also likes the system’s eco-options and green standards, such as automatic screen dimming.
Vue is also using solid state drives rather than conventional hard drives. “With fewer moving parts, we’re consuming less energy and reducing the failure rate of the devices, which is good news,” Wilson concluded.
