Mobile PoS boosts Butta

New eco-snowsports company grows business with new technology for securely accepting credit and debit card payments

Eco-snowsports company Butta was set up in 2011 with the aim of providing long-lasting and highly durable eco-friendly wax for servicing ski and snowboard equipment.

One of the major issues for Butta was taking customer payments other than cash. Although Butta is headquartered in Leatherhead, Surrey, the team spend a portion of their time on the road selling their products.

With the mobile and seasonal nature of their business, renting a static card terminal with a fixed contract was not an option. Traditional payment methods were also unsuitable for Butta, as they did not fit well with both the modern ethos of their business and with the demands of their customers.

Finding solution in time

Butta first encountered SumUp a week before they were due to sell their products at the annual Ski and Snowboard Show in London 2012.

The team recognised that by using SumUp they would be able to accept credit and debit card payments in a quick and secure manner. They downloaded the app, signed up to SumUp and, after receiving their card reader in the post, were ready to process MasterCard and Visa card payments.

SumUp works by using a portable card reader, which is plugged into a smartphone or tablet and is used with a free app available for iOS and Android devices. The service charges a fee of 2.75% per transaction, so Butta does not have to worry about paying unnecessary fees in the off-season.

SumUp is Europay, MasterCard, Visa (EMV) and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) certified, ensuring that payments are processed in accordance with the highest security standards.

Building up new business

With the help of SumUp, Butta has been able to expand its business, with 30% of its customer base now choosing to pay by card. With an eye on Europe, SumUp’s presence in countries such as Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain will play a major part in Butta’s future success across Europe.

Jim Stewart, founder of Butta, stated: “SumUp’s unique and easy-to-use technology means that we now never miss out on a sale and, with conditions as tough as they are, small businesses like ours really can’t afford to miss out.

“Our customers are extremely thankful for the convenient service SumUp enables us to offer. SumUp has allowed us to increase our revenue, by being able to accept card payments from customers wherever we happen to be are selling our products.”
