Visa's cool new payment option – shades

By Retail Technology | Wednesday March 15 2017

Visa has unveiled new payment-enabled sunglasses in a new concept that no one saw coming

A prototype of the Visa shades was revealed this week at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas and the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro surf competitions in Gold Coast, Australia.

Chris Curtin, chief brand and innovation marketing officer at Visa, said: “Our view is we take form factors that you don't expect to be payment-enabled like sunglasses or maybe like a ring and expose to the market that maybe it can be."

The sunglasses have a tiny chip on its side and a person simply takes off the glasses and taps them on a Visa near field communication (NFC) enabled terminal to pay.

The glasses are in a testing phase to ascertain demand.
