SainsburyÂ’s has brought the first till-free store to the UK with a shop in LondonÂ’s Holborn Circus
The supermarket giant has plans to roll out the store format, which uses the SmartShop technology, across the country but is looking to gauge customer reaction first as an experiment.
Visitors to the store can scan and pay for products on their phone and then scan a QR code to complete the process and receive a receipt by email.
Digital system
Any customers who struggle with the new digital system can still pay by cash or card through a one-man helpdesk.
Clodagh Moriarty, group chief digital officer at Sainsbury's, said: “This is an experiment rather than a new format for us - it hasn't been done in the UK before and we're really excited to understand how our customers respond to the app experience.”
